Neighborhood crap

My neighborhood, Fishtown, has been in the news a lot recently. Earlier this week a pharmacist who works at a drugstore a few blocks away was arrested for selling Oxycontin illegally to local strippers. Last week a 16 year old boy who lives around the corner from me was murdered about six blocks from my house by his friends.

I make fun of Fishtown a lot. I complain about my neighbors and their kids, and make fun of the crazy mullet-heads. When I found out the full extent of what happened to kid who was murdered, I was stunned. All those kids involved live within a block radius of my house. I've seen all three of the kids arrested hanging out.

The kid they murdered is being buried today at the cemetery up the street from my house.

It can happen in any neighborhood. Fishtown isn't special. But I'm always kind of stunned at how vicious people can be. Dangerous people don't have signs on them that say, "Don't trust me -- I'm an animal." Your best friend can turn out to be your worst enemy. I never want to have to be suspicious of everyone I meet, but sometimes I wonder if that's not the best policy.

I read that article you linked to in open mouthed shock and horror. How can kids be so brutal?? That poor child and his family.

That is an unbelievable story. Jesus! What could drive kids to do something like that? It's completely unfathomable to me.

I've been following this sad story the last couple of days. Finally, the pieces are starting to come together.

First of all, by the looks of the kids that did it, they look like the typical goth kids that get beat-up on a daily basis in high school, and hang out at the cemetary. Never thought they were capable of something like this.

Second, i know it's might not be nice to say, but why is a 16 year old working at a construction site and not in high school? The money ($500 his paycheck which he was robbed for) must be nice, but is it really that hard to get a diploma? I mean you really have to try and flunk out of a Philly high school. But still, he shouldn't have been killed like that.

I'm waiting for each of the defendant's lawyers to start making excuses for these worthless human beings. Oh, poor Dominic and Nicholas have ADD and didn't know what they were doing was wrong. Of course the parents will have a line of excuses too.

This is probably the main reason I want to get a vasectomy right now. With kids like that running around, I'll get a dog instead.

Jesus. That poor kid and his family. I swear, this whole society is turning to shit.

'"He'll get what he deserves," Batzig's father said the other day.'

At least one of the parents hasn't gone into hysterical "How could my baby DO such a thing?!" mode. Parents know their kids, and should know their kids' friends. Kids who are capable of doing such things aren't that hard to spot - and I don't mean because they wear black and listen to punk ('punk' to that girl probably means Avril Lavigne, anyway). Emotional disturbances aren't easy to hide.

What the hell is wrong with society? How do these things just happen? The poor families involved...

That story chilled my bones and made me feel sick.

Just curious. Are all of the kids minors? Isn't there supposed to be some sort of rule to keep names and faces confidential unless they are being tried as adults? I'm assuming that there hasn't been enough time to bring the case that far along.

That story really, really sucks. I used to love living in the city, but I high-tailed it to the burbs after getting shot at while driving in my car on Bainbridge St.
