My badge is for kicking your ass

Yesterday the Boy Scouts Cradle of Liberty council [that's the Philadelphia area Boy Scouts] announced that they would no longer abide by the national charter's policy of sexual discrimination.

I was stunned.

Stunned. Coincidentally, the national office is located in Texas.

Now Boston has already done the same thing, but it's a "don't ask, don't tell" type of policy. To my knowledge, Philadelphia's decision is a bit more final than that -- they just don't care if you're gay, because being gay doesn't automatically make you a pedophile or a bad person or a recruiter for the gay circus.

Shortly after the announcement was made, a scout leader from South Philly held a press conference and announced he's gay. It wasn't because he felt the need to come out on local television, but because he wanted to immediately challenge the announcement...to be sure this new policy is for real and not just a bunch of bullshit for the media.

And it's important -- the Boy Scouts are having their national convention here next week. If you live or work in the city, don't be surprised by the protests you'll see.

While I still think the Boy Scouts [and the Girl Scouts] is an organization that teaches outdated stereotypes and roles, I'm excited that local councils are waking up and not letting the Jerry Falwell types get the last word.

I'll be interested in seeing how this all plays out over the next week or two.

Yup, the BSoA HQ is in Las Colinas, where I work and where Office Space was filmed.

About time! If this spreads throughout the organization, maybe I can quit insulting my co-workers by telling them why I refuse to buy their sons' overpriced caramel corn and cashews during the holidays.

Wow. Go Philly! I'm also stunned. I was a Boy Scout for a hot minute way back when, but I hated it--especially because I had to do whatever a scout of a higher rank told me to do, even if it was pointless. Some of the other scouts in my troop were not only abusive and homophobic (there was a scout that they suspected was gay), but the scoutmaster never addressed their unscoutlike behavior (of course, you could make the argument that homophobia is certainly scoutlike). The last straw was when the worst one of them called my house harassing me! Then my grandfather picked up the phone to talk to him and the scout started cursing at him! If I wasn't a skinny tentpole, I probably would have done my best to damage that kid physically.

But the universe is a wonderful thing, and I'm sure karma will certainly come around and bite him in the butt, if it hasn't already.

Another thing I hated about the Scouts: the comics in Boys' Life magazine totally sucked.

I hope Jerry does make a comment... I am in the mood for a good laugh!

I hadn't heard this bit of news yet.

Thanks for sharing.

Jason's learned a lot of good things from Boy Scouts - I don't think they teach him outdated stereotypes or roles - and I'm really glad he's a member. As for the gay thing - I guess it's just never come up for us. I don't think I was ever asked when I signed up to be a leader for a few years, and we don't screen the boys. I wonder how it would be handled within our pack if it ever came up. I know the rules in our Council still ban gays, but I am still glad that Jason is a member.

It's funny, we are discussing this on a christian message board I visit. Both my son's are scouts now and I think this is ridiculous. I mean, as you stated, just because you are gay doesn't make you a pedophile. I don't care if people in the scouts are gay, as long as they don't teach my kids about their lifestyle or act out in any inappropriate ways... scouting isn't about sex or sexual orientation. Someone on the board I am on, made it sound like the gays started this. I disagreed. I think the scouts did by refusing them to be in the scouts. Someone commented that the gays should be prepared for the backlash since they are fighting this. I replied with the scouts should also be prepared and not accept public funding if they want to be considered a PRIVATE organization that can refuse to let people join. It has nothing to do with my christian morals or beliefs. Simply that I feel that to be FAIR, if the scouts want to exclude people based on religion, sex, color, nationality, and sexual orientation and they want to be considered private so they can discriminate, then they should also not accept public funding... and from what I understand, scouts all over the US are working so that they don't have to use United Way etc. As far as scouts go though, for my own kids. I think it is great. The sex issue never comes up in our meetings and in all reality, the kids are going to be the one's suffering for all this crap that the media is throwing out there and for all the agendas getting tossed around. I think that is sad.

WOW! History in the making! And, the ex just signed my son up for Boy Scouts. I feel better about it already!
